Good Things Come To An End Leaving Taiwan

Good Things Come To An End - Leaving Taiwan

Good Things Come To An End

This post has been pending for a year now. This is probably related to some sort of Goodbye Anxiety (as long as you don’t say goodbye it’s not over yet). But like all good things my time in Taiwan has come to an end and it’s better to move on a go on new adventures before the present wilts. In the last days of my life in Taiwan I wanted to soak everything up one last time and save it in my brain. This meant for me that I wanted to visit all the places and do all the activities I enjoyed so much in the last months. So what did I do?

  • I lent a scooter from a friend and drove around the north coast of Taiwan
  • I partied with my friends
  • I enjoyed all the different Taiwanese dishes
  • I walked through the busy streets of Taiwan

Driving with a scooter in Taipei was a hell of an experience. While I’m a pretty safe driver, the crazy traffic and the huge streets with many different lanes were a tough challenge. But I actually enjoyed it quite a bit and felt really immersed in the city. Nevertheless my heartbeat decreased to more reasonable levels as soon as I left the Taipei behind me. My route took me from Taipei to Keelung (基隆市) and then around the North Coast to Tamsui (淡水區). This road leads through a beautiful scenery. On the way I found a hill (野馬飛行傘) where a lot of paragliders started their journey through the sky.

From Qianshuiwan Coast Park it’s possible to take either the fast way through Tamsui along the Red MRT Line or the more eye pleasing and nicer road through Yangmingshan National Park. Of course I opted for the latter choice. In the northern part of Yangmingshan are many religious monuments located. The most iconic one is probably a cemetry with the enormous Jin-Tower (北海福座).

After following the road for some more time I came to the Siaoyoukeng Recreation Area (小油坑遊憩區), where sulfurous gas emerges from the rocks. From there I drove deeper into the beautiful Yangmingshan National Park to enjoy the beautiful views.

From Yangmingshan I took the direct home back to my dorm and I was kind of happy when I got off the scooter and could finally shower off the dirt from my body.

While I missed some aspects of European Cities (f.e. sitting on a square and drinking a nice coffee), I also really fell in love with the crazy busyness of the streets in Taipei. Hundreds of people, dozens of food stands and the neon light poetry crammed into tiny streets. Therefore I wandered a lot through the different streets and nightmarkets during my last days.

Apart from wandering through streets I met up with a lot of my friends. I spent an evening at a restaurant called “The Top”, which overlooks Taipei. In an historic part of Taipei I also finally got hold onto (with a little help of my language exchange partner) a traditional red chinese lantern as souvenir for home. Of course I also went to a lot of farewell parties, which all have this intrinsic sadness.

The more I wanted to use my limited time properly the faster it slipped through my fingers. In a glimpse I sat in a cab to the Airport. It was sad to leave, but I was also happy about the awesome time and experiences I had.
